Mosquitos 101
Adult female mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant or standing water, which makes elimination of standing water crucial. Mosquitoes have called many parts of the world home, especially warm, wet, tropical climates (hello, Florida!). Mosquitoes like living near people, as human blood provides the necessary protein for the females’ egg-laying needs.
How Do I Know I've Got Mosquitos?
You may have mosquitos in your home without even knowing why. It’s common to confuse mosquito bites with bed bugs or other insect invasions — but once you know the signs, you’ll be able to confirm if you do have mosquitos or not.
Standing Water
Mosquitos thrive in stagnant water vessels, to name a few: dog bowls, puddles, tires, or potted plants. The longer the stagnant water stays out, the more likely you are to see mosquitos being attracted to it.
High-pitched buzzing sound
If you hear a distinct, high-pitched buzzing sound, it’s probably mosquitos.
Visible, itchy bites
If you ever went to summer camp, you’ve probably had your fair share of mosquito mania. You may not even notice being bitten, but within a few minutes you may notice a red, swollen, or puffy bump on the affected area.
Mosquitoes hovering around food
You may even catch mosquitoes hovering over food in your kitchen. If so, they’ve made it inside the house. They usually go after fruits and can live off of its nectar for a long time. Keep sweets, especially fresh fruits, packed away to avoid attracting mosquitos.
What Are the Dangers of Mosquitos?
Mosquitoes can be harmless, but in some rare cases, bites can be deadly. Some carry highly transmittable, serious diseases like West Nile virus, Malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya, and Zika. Across the world today, mosquitoes transmitting malaria cause 2 to 3 million deaths per year. .
